In railway civil engineering, the quality of the foundational work determines the long-term success of a project. Earthworks, foundations, drainage systems, crossings, and level crossings create the prerequisites for safe and reliable rail operations. As a Deutsche Bahn-qualified supplier, Klefenz carries out all civil engineering work under, next to, and on the track. From station renovations and cable routes to mast foundations and the complete renewal of level crossings, we implement demanding infrastructure projects precisely, cost-effectively, and in compliance with the specific requirements of ongoing rail operations.
In civil engineering on the track, three factors are decisive: safety in the vicinity of ongoing rail operations, efficient material logistics, and timely implementation within the specified track possession periods. Klefenz possesses the necessary experience, technical resources, and qualified personnel for all three areas. Our employees are specially trained for work in the railway sector and are familiar with the unique requirements of railway operations. Safety-monitored measures are carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations and guidelines of Deutsche Bahn. This ensures safe, compliant, and economical execution—even under demanding conditions and tight timeframes.
For utility crossings under track systems—such as drinking water, power, or fiber optic lines—Klefenz utilizes trenchless methods whenever local conditions permit. Pipe jacking allows lines to be safely routed under the rail network without opening the track bed or unnecessarily disrupting rail operations. As a DVGW-certified pipeline constructor according to GW 301 and GW 381, Klefenz also meets the requirements of water suppliers and infrastructure operators. In this way, we combine railway engineering experience with professional pipeline construction—safely, compliantly, and efficiently.
Station modernization and level crossing renewal projects bundle numerous civil engineering services into a single project. Klefenz handles the entire implementation – from platform heightening, drainage systems, and elevator shafts to paving, asphalt, and cable trenching work. For level crossings, clients also receive all services from a single source: earthworks, substructure, drainage, road surfacing, and road connections are efficiently coordinated and implemented within the specified track possession times. This results in high-performance transport facilities with minimal impact on rail operations.
The cable trenching and route construction division for rail infrastructure is headed by Philipp Etspüler, Division Manager and Senior Site Manager for Railway Construction. With his many years of experience in railway construction, he is your point of contact for level crossings, line upgrades, station modernizations, and all civil engineering work in track areas. Klefenz carries out railway civil engineering projects across the entire German rail network and is flexibly positioned to operate from our locations in Waldshut-Tiengen, Germersheim, and Zwickau. Please send us your tender documents or planned track closures—we would be happy to provide you with a binding quote.

Whether it is a demanding construction project or a professional perspective – Klefenz stands for experience, reliable collaboration and a clear commitment to quality. If you would like to realise a project or become part of our company, we look forward to speaking with you and taking the next step together.
